Colin L. Fairman, Ph.D., is a U.S. patent attorney with a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences and cardiovascular physiology. Dr. Fairman’s practice includes representing universities and companies throughout the Midwest and nationally in identifying, protecting, and enforcing their intellectual property in the areas of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, genomics, and medical devices.
Representative areas of Dr. Fairman’s practice includes contributing to the development of global IP strategies, managing implementation of global IP strategies for patent portfolios, seeking and maintaining an appropriate level of protection, educating clients in relevant aspects of patent portfolio development, keeping informed of research and development activity being conducted in-house and/or with partners to ensure protection for ideas, inventions or discoveries, providing guidance on research and development programs to develop protectable intellectual property and not infringe on the intellectual property of others, support client legal teams with advice on intellectual property issues relating to agreements, providing commercial groups with advice on relevant intellectual property issues and input into IP due diligence activities, partnering closely with IP attorneys of collaborators, providing input into IP licensing discussions and negotiations where appropriate, reviewing proposed publications and grants with particular emphasis on ensuring the protection of intellectual property, and maintaining up to date IP summaries for R&D projects.
Particular areas of expertise include biotechnology, gene editing and transgenic manipulations of livestock, pharmaceuticals, molecular biology, biosimilars, polymer chemistry, medical devices, nutraceuticals, and lasers.
